Earlier today, I was having a conversation with some Trump supporters regarding the budget. Here are some snap shots from that conversation.
- These guys didn’t think that disadvantaged people in need should be their problem.
- J (see above) believes that all black men, like A (also see above), are GENETICALLY PREDISPOSED TO WALKING OUT ON THEIR CHILDREN (which is on the list of the most racist shit I have heard today).
- R (see above) doesn’t think any of this is a problem.
- K (see above) thinks elderly people who can’t feed themselves should be automatically institutionalized.
- R, B and J all believe that because they “take care of their own” that others should be able to do the same.
Trump supporters: these are the people that make up your base. These are the people you have chosen to lock arms with. And if I am frank, these are the people that represent the BULK of you. Don’t believe me? Do a little research. The majority of Trump’s support base is pretty vile.
You see, when the base that elected your president is made up in large part by Js and other racists, you probably elected a racist. (And you *might* be one yourself… because at the very least, you’re OK with it).
In casting your ballot, you decided that racism, xenophobia, sexual assault, misogyny, and ableism weren’t deal breakers for you. You decided that your privilege mattered more to you than the wellbeing of your fellow Americans. You decided that, even though this nation was built through the exploitation of people of color, their needs are worth less than yours. You decided that it is OK to mock people with disabilities and limit their access to health care. You decided it was OK to sexually assault women and claim control over their reproductive rights. You decided it was OK to demonize immigrants and stir up xenophobic hatred across the nation. You decided it was OK to discriminate against LGBTQ individuals because their identity makes you uncomfortable. You decided that it was OK to brand all Muslim people as dangerous and treat them differently from their Christian counterparts. You decided that an inclusive, progressive nation didn’t serve your personal needs… and so you chose Trump. In making that choice, you showed us who you are. You can sit there and say, “Well just because I voted for him doesn’t mean I think any of that is OK,” but please, miss me with that. It shows, at the very least, that you don’t think it’s NOT OK and when people’s lives are on the table, I’m not ready to listen to your contrived, gray area rebuttals. You have shown that you have no empathy or respect for people who are different from you or who might, in some way, be disadvantaged. These are the qualities that make up the bulk of Trump’s support base. This is what you have chosen to identify with. This is who you are. After all, Proverbs 13:20 says “he that walketh with wise men shall be wise; but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” You have chosen to be the companion of fools. And you are the company you keep.
So, if you are still proudly part of that base, then you are an unfortunate representation of this nation. And perhaps one of the saddest pieces is that you are likely going to pass this hatred and ignorance down to your children. However, I sincerely hope your children are smarter than you are and harbor less hate. I sincerely hope your grandchildren are embarrassed when they think of the choice you and your fellow Trump supporters made. And I hope your great grandchildren join us on the side of progress and never think of you except as an inspiration to right the wrongs committed during this time.
We are the resistance. We are here to dismantle the systems of privilege that you exploit. You, the companion of fools, will watch as the last shred of the systems that maintain your privilege are destroyed. We are here to dismantle the white patriarchy and challenge injustice at every opportunity. Unfortunately, right now, injustice is you.
